Today's Magic Numbers: 15 Percent and 4 Cups

The thing that I like about the way the New York Times handles coverage of the link between coffee and good health is that (#1) it does not shy away from revealing the controversy regarding certain outcomes and (#2) it does a good job of explaining study design and the complexities of data analysis without going on too long about it.

Today's coverage of the link between coffee-drinking and colon cancer is a perfect example. Well blogger, Anadad O'Connor reports that there has been controversy with some studies previously suggesting that coffee could increase the risk of various types of cancer. Then, of course, researchers started to parse the data more aggressively teasing out "confounding" lifestyle factors like smoking for example. Smoking can certainly put a damper on the positive health effects of anything....

However, the deciding study has come from the National Cancer Institute. In this study of more than 500,000 people, the consensus was that drinking 4 cups of coffee a day (or more) decreases the risk of colon cancer by 15%.

Researchers once again suggest that most likely it's the 1,000-plus constituent components of coffee that have this positive health effect---with a big 'thank you very much' owed to the many different types of antixoidants and chlorogenic acids that reside in this beautiful little beloved bean.

So, "thank you," to everyone who grows, picks, and brews coffee. We owe our good health to you!

So you took a look and thought it was cool. The first one is in Amsterdam and second in Italy, BTW.

But now you're thinking; "Hey Non, isn't this just a bunch of fat ladies and guys with beards dressed in Salvation Army clothes from the Middle Ages?"

Not so fast, Buster.

Try this on for size;

So, you're not as well stocked as the Global Headquarters as far as exotic liqueurs? Also, Brandy can be pretty darn expensive. That's ok.

Get some Kahlua (made with Arabica coffe beans and sugarcane), and make a tasty;

Cafe Cabana

1 oz. Coffee Liqueur
3 oz. Club Soda

Pour into ice-filled tall glass and garnish with a lime wedge (no sprinkles).

Or, you could go for my personal favorite; a White Russian (aka a Caucasian);

White Russian

1 oz. Coffee Liqueur
2 oz. Vodka
Milk or Cream

Serve with ice.

At the Global Headquarters, we once had a party where the attendees watched; "The Big Lebowski" and were required to have a White Russian each time the Dude (protagonist) had one.

We find that an occasional Adult Beverage provides an essential respite from our scientific pursuits.

What are our scientific pursuits, you ask?

Proving the obvious. Someone has to do it. Not everyone gets to fool around with colliders and what-not.

Our most recent study (soon to published in Revista de Colombiana de Estadistica and Boy's Life) involved proving through experiment beyond a shadow of any doubt that one should never play cards with a person named; "Lefty".

While we're on an Italian theme.

2 Contemporary Italian movies to check out are;

"Light of my Eyes" and "Quiet Chaos."

Quiet Chaos, Caos Calmo in Italian, even features a cameo by non-other than Roman Polanski. Polanski made a film recently called; "Ghost Writer." If you watch Ghost Writer closely you'll notice how amazing Polanski's direction is, and also you'll likely realize what a tragedy it is that he hasn't made more films.

BTW; Jim Jarmusch's movie "Coffee and Cigarettes" is now available on youtube.
