Coffee Trends 2022: Got Alt Milk? Going Bulletproof?

One of the major predictions about coffee-drinking in 2020 was that nondairy coffee “creamers” would become a big thing. Well, it happened. Between 2020 and 2021, there was a significant surge in consumption of nondairy “milk", including almond, coconut, oat, soy, and cashew milk.

According to Morning Consult, 67% of the adults in the United States have tried nondairy milk and 1/3 drink it on a regular basis, though only 12% actually have it at home in their fridge. I am part of that 12%, I’m happy to say. I am a fan of oat milk---though I have not yet developed brand loyalty.

In addition, there are differences in alternative milk (alt-milk) consumption based on generation and politics. Overall, 12% of Gen Z, 37% of millennials, 24% of Gen X, and 27% of Baby Boomers drink alt-milk. As for politics, 35% of liberals and 30% of conservatives drink alt-milk.

Coffee chains and cafes have been huge drivers of the significant uptick in nondairy milk consumption, and the trend is continuing unabated.

2022 Trends

Let’s check out some of the coffee-drinking trends happening as we head into 2022.

Linchpin SEO reports that about 60% of US coffee drinkers visit a chain coffee shop at least once a month; 50% of Americans get coffee from drive-throughs; and more than 50% of coffee consumption is considered “premium”---meaning espresso-based drinks and cold-brew coffees.

So what’s new?

Snap-chilled coffee is a growing trend. It is made by taking freshly brewed coffee and cooling it rapidly---a process that extracts more flavor than cold-brewing the coffee. I have not yet seen it at any of the major chains, but it’s clearly catching on among premium coffee drinkers.

Bulletproof Coffee

Since bulletproof coffee arrived in 2015, it has become a thing, especially for people who follow a keto diet. Bulletproof coffee is a creamy coffee drink made with coffee, grass-fed butter, and medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) oil. MCT oil is high in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins.

Bullet coffee is touted for its weight-loss benefits and many people who drink it report feelings of extreme clarity, lack of midday fatigue, having “clean” energy, feelings of calmness, and weight loss. Some people even add nootropics (cognitive enhancement supplements) to up the ante on clarity and energy.

Consumer Affairs even defines Bulletproof coffee as a meal replacement, which makes sense if you're on a keto diet. While detractors suggest that bulletproof coffee is high in cholesterol, it seems that this "buttered coffee," is here to stay.

I have been curious about bulletproof coffee for a while, but not curious enough to go out and buy the ingredients or even try to buy it at a local café. However, the good news is that Bulletproof (the company) offers a special Bulletproof Creamer on their website. You make a standard cup of coffee and add this creamer and 'ta-da' you are drinking bulletproof coffee.

Let's Make This an Amazing Year

2022 is a brand new year and I’m determined to at least one different coffee trend that I've never tried before---and I will probably try Bulletproof coffee, since the creamer is an option.  I’m also planning to read more; hike harder trails, and get in a lot of travel time.

One thing to note is that given coffee’s health benefits, including a decreased risk of type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, various cancers, depression, Parkinson’s disease, and cirrhosis, drinking coffee is an excellent way to get healthier, happier, and more energetic, so you can take on whatever 2022 brings.

Happy New Year!
