Trending in 2020: Coffee porn for the masses
Traditionally, the word ‘porn’ has been associated with taboo sexuality, but according
to the Oxford dictionary, the word ‘porn’ can be used to describe love for
inanimate things (presumably in a family-friendly way).
PORN: Oxford dictionary definition #2: Television programs,
magazine, books, etc., that are regarded as emphasizing the sensuous or
sensational aspects of a nonsexual subject and stimulating a compulsive interest
in their audience.
We’ve heard about weather porn, food porn, even architecture porn or real estate porn, but coffee porn—not so much. Despite the fact that coffee in all its iterations is beautiful---from the bean to the brew---when you google ‘coffee porn’ it’s all about the intersection of obvious sexuality and coffee, with coffee relegated to a prop. That’s not what I’m talking about.
I was standing next to the coat room at the Montclair Art Museum last Friday
evening, at the coffee vending machine, which is an elegant, highly functional,
beautifully designed machine that dispenses Americanos, lattes, cappuccinos, and
other hot drinks---for just $1.00. I spend a lot of time at museums, and I
really appreciate a museum that makes it possible for me to drink coffee (for
$1) and eat delicious food from the food trucks, while perusing beautiful art
exhibits, listening to jazz bands, and chatting with my friends and neighbors. We’ve heard about weather porn, food porn, even architecture porn or real estate porn, but coffee porn—not so much. Some of the most stunning photography I’ve ever seen
features coffee. Whether it’s black
coffee, espresso drinks with little hearts on top, red and green coffee beans, coffee
being force-streamed from a silver spout, kiosk coffee sitting slightly tepid
in a paper cup, coffee with cream, coffee with oat milk, coffee with hazelnut
whipped cream, coffee, coffee, more coffee, and some coffee to go with it.
Coffee is beyond beautiful. It is a life-giving, morally and
spiritually uplifting, beautifully sensuous elixir. We should cherish it and
accept in in all of its iterations. And while we’re at it, let’s make ‘coffee
porn’ a thing.
Would love to see your favorite coffee photos. Happy
Valentine’s Day!
